It had been one of those mornings where Caroline simply felt the need to get out of bed, get ready to face the world, and go shopping at the mall until she was too exhausted too do anything else. So that was exactly what she had done. Mercifully, it was a Saturday, and she had very little homework this weekend. What she did have could all easily be done tomorrow evening. But now was a time to have fun, even if it was by herself. She had the whole day ahead of her to bring home a dozen clothing bags stuffed with a huge assortment of clothes. Of course, all of this would go on her daddy's credit card. Ah. She loved being rich. Amazingly, it had only taken her an hour to take a shower, get dressed, and get out the door this morning. Some part of her must really want to get shopping.
Driving to the mall, Cara cranked up the radio and rolled down her windows, feeling elated as the wind blew through her hair. She sang along with the song playing on the radio, and actually came very close to getting in a wreck when she absentmindedly ran a red light. Wow. That was lucky. It was not a good thing to run a red light in Los Angeles. In fact, now that she was thinking clearly, she was very lucky not to have been blind-sided by that oncoming Dodge. Whew. Maybe she should turn down the radio.
Seeing as it was pretty early in the morning, some people might have been amazed to see the mall parking lot already packed full. But Caroline knew how many people in L.A. were crazy shoppers like herself. They were countless. There was a good chance she would run into one of her friends. She found a relatively good parking spot, but still had to walk a ways until she reached the front entrance. A cool blast of hair greeted her as she stepped into the mall, along with soft music layered under the chorus of voices. Throngs of people crowded each store and the halls, but Caroline didn't mind. She was a people person, and quite apart from feeling claustrophobic, she was in her element. From years of shopping at this mall, she knew it like the back of her hand, and could easily maneuver through people.
Three hours later, Caroline collapsed into an empty table at the food court. She had just run out to her car and deposited all her shopping bags into the trunk, where she had had to simply cram them in. Now she was back inside for a bite to eat before heading home, or maybe going to visit some friends. Getting up to stand in line for a taco, she thought about what she could do with the rest of her day. There was still plenty of time to go do something fun. She stood in line, deep in thought, oblivious to the fact that there was somebody she knew not far away.

Waking up to a hangover was never fun. Waking up to a hangover on the floor wasn't fun. Waking up to a hangover on the floor of somebody you didn't know? Bad idea. Last nights party must have been a good one, because Jared wasn't the type to get so drunk he woke up on the floor. Somebody must have pushed him towards it, but it had to happen eventually. It had been almost a year since the last time it happened, way back. So he couldn't complain, he was still doing better then most people. That, and the hangover wasn't really that bad. Just a constant throbbing that he was sure would ease off with a dose of aspirin and some coffee. Checking the time, he noted that he'd probably slept in way, way too long. No shit Sherlock, it's already 11. Even on weekends Jared woke up by 9 at the latest. He did have to live up to his nickname after all. Being Mr. Perfect took alot of work. Especially when he slipped up and did stupid stuff like this, he was too smary to act stupid. Stretching out his legs as he headed for his car (after a quick goodbye to the still drunk thrower of the party, which had been mostly for the group of guys watching football last night) Jared pondered what he'd do next. Go home, have a shower, have coffee and then maybe grab some lunch. Unless Willa was cooking for him, Jared avoided eating at home (his Mom burnt everything). Which meant he was heading for the food court at the mall. The mall in Los Angeles was bound to be stocked full by the time he got there, but he wouldn't really care. Anywhere he went would be packed and people would be gawking at him, youngest hockey player in the world that he was. Los Angeles wasn't a place for solitude and getting away from the world, it was a place to party. Which is exactly what he'd already done way too much of over the last day or two. After he got something to eat, he knew he should probably go shopping. Socks, a new jacket, probably a few more pairs of shoes. Having a big wardrobe was easy, learning to color coordinate? No, he still couldn't do that. When it came to matching his clothes he was hopeless. Once he got home, he ran himself through the shower and into his clothes, before heading right back out to the car directly after. It was alot colder outside then he anticipated, but he didn't bother to go inside and get his jacket. Mom waved him a goodbye, he waved back lazily and then he was out of the driveway, hardly home for a half hour. Stopping off for coffee at Starbucks before he got to the mall, he found a parking spot near the back of the lot, deciding he could walk from there. Aspirin turned out to be pretty pointless, just the smell of coffee alone was making his headache ease off. Pushing through the doors on the east end of the mall, he headed through the crowd to the food court. Used to crowds, it was easy for him to find his way there. Spotting Caroline standing in line, he couldn't help himself. Sticking to his own business didn't seem like fun at all, he didn't really want to just eat and leave to get more sleep. That didn't really seem like fun. "Hey, Carol," Jared spoke, as soon as he was close enough to her, standing in line next to her. "Let me guess, you spent the entire day here so far?"((Ha, now I don't have to make a board!))

[haha, nope. I decided to make one. ]
Caroline's mind quickly returned to the food court as one of her best friends, Jared, came over and joined her in line. As zoned out as she was, she hadn't even noticed him until he was right next to her. A smile lit up her face, and she cocked her head to the side slightly, something she had a habit of doing without even noticing it. Pretending to look hurt, Cara pouted her lips and replied to his question, "No, I haven't spent the entire day here." Then she grinned and relented, "Actually only about three hours. And that is pretty damn good for me, Jared, you know that."
That was ever-so-true. It was not uncommon for Carol to actually spend the full day at the mall shopping. And by the whole day, I mean hours and hours. She never gets tired of it. Well, she does physically, but not mentally. Who can get tired of buying clothes and shoes and all that fun stuff? Certainly not Cara.
As the line moved forward ever-so-slowly, Caroline faced Jared and looked him up and down, but not too conspicuously. He looked good, as usual. Too bad he was dating Willa. But oh well. There were plenty of other fish in the see, weren't there? "So have you been doing some shopping?" she asked him. She didn't see him carrying any shopping bags, but maybe he had taken them out to his car like she had. Or maybe he was just here to get something to eat. Whatever.
Right after she asked Jared this question, it was finally her turn to order. "What can I get for you? the guy behind the counter asked in a bored, monotonous voice. Clearly, he just wanted to get this over with and go home. But he still had a few more hours to go, at least. Poor guy. Not feeling at all sympathetic, Caroline briskly ordered a simple taco and a drink, what she always got from this place. Yum. The moved over to the pick-up area and waited for her order to be completed, glancing over at Jared, as it was his turn to order. [blahhhh.]

With all the buzz in the foodcourt, Jared wasn't surprised that Caroline hadn't seen him until he was right beside her. He'd been about to turn and lay a hand on her shoulder, hoping to get a jump out of her when she'd finally zoned back in and turned to face him. Caroline was following her usual habit, tilting her head to the side like a dog (sometimes he swore she was the sptting image of a pomeranian). Camilla's hurt look really was priceless, and Jared couldn't help but laugh lightly. "Three hours? Wow, goodness, you must be on some kind of mall diet for that to happen!" Jared exclaimed, clearly meaning it. "Yah, yah... Your right, that's pretty good for you. How much did you buy? Your Dad's poor credit card..."
Jared was one of the few guys who wasn't anti-mall. The kind of boy you could haul around the mall all day, because even if he wasn't enthused, he'd never complain in a million years. Often he accompanied Carol on her mall visits, carrying her stuff around for her. Most guys started whining as soon as they stuck there foot in a mall. Jared just grinned and bore it.
Jared knew that look from Caroline, that up and down inspection. Paying no mind to it was easy, it was just Caroline being Caroline. She inspected pretty much every boy, he just chose to think that she did the same to him on a friendly basis. If not, Caroline knew he was with Willa, he'd made that pretty clear. "Nah, I just came here to get something to eat. You know I'm a hopeless cook... and I don't know how to order pizza without my Mom catching me and asking why I don't 'appreciate her cooking'. So, this was my last resort. I don't have to ask what you've been up to..." There was no doubt she'd been doing some very driven shopping.
Pity the poor guys who had to work behind the counter at fast food restaurants, something none of his friends would ever have to do, because almost all of his friends were rich. Standing behind a counter like that for hours had to suck, though Jared wouldn't know. He'd had other jobs, mosty acting as a referee for tykes games and other sports related things. Listening to her order, he stepped up right after her. Tacos, mexican food had always been a favorite of Jared's. Probably just because it was spicy and exotic (and not made of raw fish). That and maybe he just liked the fact that it tended to have the potential of being greasy too. Jared ordered a larger sized burrito (hey, he was a big guy) and a drink as well. Over eating wasn't a good idea right now, hangover and all. After that he tossed the guy behind the counter a smile. "You should get a stool, or something. To sit on, ya know?" Jared suggested. Of course- he was Jared, he had to try to cheer everyone up.

"Oh, I really didn't buy that much at all," Caroline said, laughing at the thought of what her father would say. He wouldn't be surprised of course (she spent more than this several times a week), but he always marveled at how many clothes she could buy, and how she insisted that she needed them. Well, she did. Cara couldn't imagine what life would be like if she couldn't shop all she wanted, whenever she wanted, wherever she wanted.
The nice thing about Jared was that he didn't mind tagging along with her at the mall. In fact, Caroline actually preferred shopping with him than with some of her other friends. If she went with one of her girl friends, Cara usually didn't have anyone to tell her what looked good and what she shouldn't buy, because they were all too busy trying on their own things. But Jared helped her out with that, and he had a good sense of style. In fact, Carol didn't really think of Jared as a guy sometimes. He was one of her best friends, and nothing had ever really happened between them, so she could just think of him as a friend. He was good company.
